AMP Generators: the next generation of female brass band conductors

We’re pleased to present our new project in collaboration with Brass Bands England and Shepherd Group Brass Band. AMP Generators is a new placement for young women conductors.

This Spring, Annie Wilkins and Becky Lund have begun the project. Annie and Becky will be mentored as conductors over the next six months by leading baritone horn soloist and conductor Katrina Marzella. Rehearsals have just started and we’re looking forward to bringing you more news from Annie and Becky’s journey as AMP Generators progresses.

Craig Brown of Shepherd Group Brass Band commented:

“We are delighted to be teaming up with BBE and AMP in this really important project. By hosting Becky and Annie we hope to raise the profile of female conductors and provide a platform for change, working with Katrina to develop their skills and confidence in taking their work further.”

Sarah Baumann of Brass Bands England and AMP’s Chair said:

“Ensuring open opportunities are available for young women wishing to start their conducting journey is an initiative BBE is delighted to participate in. This collaboration with Katrina, NYMAZ and Shepherd Group Brass Band is a fantastic example of BBE’s commitment to an inclusive future of banding, always working towards better banding for all.”

Their mentor, conductor and baritone soloist Katrina Marzella added:

“I’m very proud to be associated with this project, which aims to champion increased diversity on the podium by providing new opportunities for young women who conduct. Alongside my colleagues at BBE, AMP and Sheps, there is a real sense of passion in bringing about change and encouraging women to conduct through these specific projects.

We all know that visibility is important to initiate change, and this project will help give many young women conductors, and especially Annie and Becky, a new platform from which to shine.  I’m looking forward to helping them grow as conductors, as well as working with everyone involved in this important movement for change.”

Annie and Becky have interviewed each other to tell us more about this project in their own words.

We can’t wait to see how AMP Generators develops!
