Community Music Now conference

Community Music Now is a collaborative conference between Sound Sense, Leeds Beckett University and AMP, exploring innovative practice in community music. It is taking place 1-2 March at Leeds Beckett University, with tickets from starting from just £10 (concessions).

The two-day event is suitable for both emerging and experienced practitioners and researchers, with opportunities to connect, share, celebrate and learn from each other.

Programme highlights include:

Saturday 1 March

  • Manasamitra: Join Supriya Nagarajan & Duncan Chapman for the beautiful and immersive Lullaby Sonic Cradle.
  • Sounds Better CIC: Liv McLennan & Kevin Plummer showcase inspiration and practical ways of working musically with intergenerational groups, and people with dementia.
  • Brass Bands England & Shepherd Brass Band: Exploring the role of brass bands in engaging local communities. Engaging all-ages, the immersive structure of brass bands is an important social model that reaches beyond tradition and is rooted at the heart of thriving creative communities.
  • Music Production Simplified with Leroy Lupton (More Music):  Simplifying music production and beat-making using software that is all entirely free and web-based. This workshop has engaged and inspired countless pupils who would otherwise be uninterested in school music lessons and encourages teachers to incorporate more tech into their teaching – removing barriers to using music production in their lessons.
  • MAP Charity:  An alternative education provider working with young people in Leeds, exploring their distinctive business and creative model.
  • Community Music Platform – A platform session featuring researchers and practitioners sharing details of their latest practice.

 

Sunday 2 March

  • Cohesive Harmonies: Dr Tenley Martin, Rebecca Denniff, Debbie Armour will share details of their practice using music to make social change.
  • Liquid Listening: Lawrence Bradshaw will share the benefits of experiencing music whilst immersed in water, which stimulates the inner ear directly, as well as providing a womb like environment and all-body vibrations.
  • AMP Young Producers: AMP young music producers programme for 18-25 year olds, will present how the charity shares decision-making and responsibilities with young people.
  • Made with Music: Co-Directors Hannah Dilworth and Kathryn Sturman (recent recipient of the Youth Music Inspirational Music Leader Award) will deliver a session presenting OPEN, a new inclusive ensemble in Leeds for anyone who might need extra support to make music with family and friends.
  • ICCM researchers panel: A discussion forum led by International Centre for Community Music
  • Practical careers sessions, including mentoring skills, being self-employed and applying for funding
  • …and much more!
