Remembering Helen Mahoney

It is with great sadness that we bring you news of the death of our colleague and trustee, Helen Mahoney.

Helen was a valued member of our team, and contributed a huge amount to the Yorkshire arts sector. She was passionate about making change and providing opportunities for people living in rural Yorkshire, and she tackled this via many angles, which demonstrated her varied talents as a researcher and producer: via gathering evidence and research to demonstrate the challenges and solutions (in both her Developing the Rural Creative & Cultural Landscape report and the 2023 Gone in the Air report); setting up a network to create connections across the arts community (Ryedale Arts and Culture Network); and making exciting things happen on the ground (Noisy Villages gigs). Helen was also the Director of the North East branch of Live Music Now for a number of years, during which time we shared an office at our base in Clements Hall.

Helen was a change-maker, but did all this with a gentle yet determined composure. Her contribution to the artistic landscape in Yorkshire has been impactful and will not be forgotten.

We are so touched that she chose AMP as the charity she would like people to donate to in her memory, and we are extremely grateful to her family, friends and colleagues who have contributed. We will discuss with her family how best to use these donations to honour her memory and best reflect her wishes. We will update our website when we have further details about this.

Our chair, Sarah Baumann, said:

“Helen was a passionate advocate for making the creative lives of people in North Yorkshire better and brighter. She was a conscientious trustee of AMP and we are so incredibly honoured and touched that our organisation was so high in her thoughts. We are ever-grateful of Helen’s contribution to AMP and the wider sector, and will continue to share and celebrate her work.”

We are sending our very best wishes to Helen’s family during this sad time.
